The Phantom Menace Review

Hello! I decided that I was going to watch a movie each weekend this summer (this quickly turned into each week because I am busy and cannot always to what I want to do when I want to do it). The first part of this is watching every Star Wars movie in the Skywalker Saga + Rogue One, and reviewing them. Enjoy!

THE ACTUAL REVIEW:

Guys, I think George Lucas might just be a racist. George Lucas certainly loved CGI critters though. Podracing is so cool, I still want it to be real. The practical effects in this movie are infinitely cooler than the animated ones. Ben Quadinaros deserved better. This movie is far more logical, engaging, and impressive than it receives credit for. Also, force speedrunning is a thing and never gets addressed again.

Each prequel has a hero and a villain.

In Episode 1, Qui-Gon is the hero, and Mace Windu is the villain. Also mid-chlorians are still stupid; I wonder if Lucas’s planned sequels would actually explain them in a non-BS way. People talk a lot about whether or not a SW project *feels* like Star Wars, and honestly, this movie feels a lot more like SW than I remembered/expected. It must have been such an exciting prospect, seeing the council, the genesis of Anakin, etc. Huge for world building. Qui-Gon does not get enough screen time fr. Best Jedi no cap. It’s interesting to see the injection of elements that deteriorate the solidity of the canon, as well as merchandise opportunities. New droids, aliens, ships, weapons, lightsabers, etc. It’s like seeing the start of a slippery slope that predicates another, more slippery slope.

6/10 pretty good?

This review ended up being pretty abridged. The next review (and likely rest to follow) will be much more detailed! Thanks for not reading.
